For this assignment we were tasked with making an albumcover in a certain art style of our choice. I chose the album If You Leave, made by Daughter.
I knew from the start I wanted to choose an album created by Daughter, since I know their music very well and saw a lot of potential.
I eventually landed on If You Leave because I found an artist who I thought went well with the vibe and feeling of the album: James Hajicek. Below you can see some of his work, which he created together with his wife Carol Panaro-Smith. This was the main inspiration and reference for my interpretation. You can read more about them and their work on their website: https://www.alchemy-studio.net/
I really wanted to capture the feeling of loss, grief and failed love, since the album is heavily focussed on these themes. The feeling of wanting more than you'll ever be able to obtain and therefore damaging yourself in the process. I also wanted the subject to be alone, with not too many distractions. That loneliness is a key part in the album as well. Below you can see a preview of If You Leave.
I originally made a few moodboards of other Daughter albums, to make deciding between each easier. After choosing I brainstormed a bit to figure out what I should show and how to interprete the music the right way. Results are shown below.
When I had clear what I wanted I went outside to collect a bunch of items I could photograph and later edit. I also made a few other photo's of items I couldn't take with me.
To close off I have a few tests and try outs with Photoshop which led me to my final design. I am adding these to show my progress from idea, to picture, to edit, to final. I also decided to not add text in the end as I felt it took away from the image. Therefore I settled on silence.
